Andrew Gillum has been returned to jail after prosecutors said the former Florida mayoral candidate missed a required drug test and subsequently tested positive for methamphetamine.
According to TMZ, Baldwin County Assistant District Attorney John Oxford said Gillum participates in a court-ordered “color code drug testing” program. Under the system, participants must call a hotline daily and report for testing when their assigned color is selected.
Oxford told TMZ that Gillum failed to appear for a test when his color was called. He was subsequently tested during a court appearance Thursday, with prosecutors saying the result came back positive for methamphetamine.
Gillum was then taken back into custody, adding another development to the legal case that began with his July arrest in Alabama. Authorities previously alleged that officers found him carrying approximately three grams of methamphetamine, marijuana joints and drug paraphernalia.
Gillum reportedly passed a drug test shortly after that arrest, and there had been speculation that he could enter a pretrial drug intervention program. It remains unclear whether the latest alleged positive test will affect his eligibility.
Gillum served as Tallahassee’s mayor from 2014 to 2018 before running for Florida governor in 2018. He narrowly lost that election to Ron DeSantis. Gillum’s representatives had not responded to TMZ’s request for comment at the time of publication.
