Former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen was arrested in Winona, Minnesota, after authorities reportedly stopped him for speeding and later booked him on a gross misdemeanor charge related to an ignition interlock device.
According to TMZ Sports, Griffen was pulled over after allegedly driving 62 mph in a 40 mph zone on Riverview Drive. Officials said he was booked for not driving with a required ignition interlock device, which prevents a vehicle from starting unless the driver provides a sober breath sample. Jail records show he was later released after posting bond.
Shortly after the incident, Griffen addressed the arrest on Instagram, denying that alcohol or drugs played any role.
“Nothing happened when I got pulled over last night,”
Griffen wrote. He explained that his license had been revoked because he had not completed a required class or test after recently moving. Griffen added,
“I wasn’t drinking, wasn’t smoking, and wasn’t doing anything wrong. Everything is fine,” while emphasizing his long-term sobriety.
The former four-time Pro Bowler spent 10 seasons with the Vikings after being selected in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft, recording 85.5 career sacks and becoming one of the franchise’s standout defensive players.
Court records indicate Griffen is scheduled to appear in court on August 28.
