South African football is mourning the loss of Jayden Adams, who has died at the age of 25 just weeks after representing Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His passing was confirmed by South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, while the cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
The news was first announced by government officials before tributes poured in from across the football community. Authorities have asked the public to avoid speculation while investigations continue.
Adams featured during South Africa’s memorable 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, helping the national team reach the knockout stage for the first time in its history. The midfielder played multiple matches during the tournament before South Africa’s journey ended with a defeat to Canada.
Away from international football, Adams played for Mamelodi Sundowns, having joined the club from Stellenbosch FC in 2025. During his career, he established himself as one of South Africa’s brightest young midfielders and earned several appearances for the national team.
In a statement, Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie described Adams as
“one of South African football’s brightest young talents.”
Meanwhile, the South African Football Players Union said his passing had
“robbed our nation and the world of a remarkable talent,”
adding that he would be remembered for his humility, extraordinary ability, and pride in representing his country.
His death comes as a devastating blow to South African football, with players, clubs, officials, and fans paying tribute to a promising career cut tragically short.
