Veteran actor Vincent Pastore, widely recognized for portraying Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero in HBO’s The Sopranos, has died at the age of 80. According to TMZ, Pastore was found unresponsive at his Bronx residence on August 1 after friends had been unable to reach him for several days.
The outlet later updated its report, citing sources who said the actor died of natural causes. Emergency responders from the Fire Department of New York pronounced him dead at the scene, while the NYPD responded as part of standard procedure.
Vincent Pastore’s breakthrough came with The Sopranos
Although Pastore appeared in numerous crime dramas throughout his career, he achieved international recognition in 1999 when he joined HBO’s The Sopranos as Big Pussy Bonpensiero, one of Tony Soprano’s closest associates.
His character became central to the series’ early storylines after secretly cooperating with the FBI, culminating in one of the show’s most memorable episodes. Pastore appeared in 30 episodes during the acclaimed drama’s seven-season run, helping establish The Sopranos as one of television’s defining crime series.
Before finding success on television, Pastore served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and later studied acting at Pace University. His film career included appearances in Goodfellas, Carlito’s Way, Men of Respect, Witness to the Mob, Shark Tale, Spinning Gold, and several independent productions.
In addition to acting, Pastore became a familiar face on reality television. He competed on Celebrity Fit Club, Dancing with the Stars, and The Celebrity Apprentice, where his playful strategy and personality earned attention from viewers.
Known for bringing authenticity and warmth to many of his performances, Pastore remained closely associated with The Sopranos throughout his life, frequently attending fan conventions and cast reunions. He is survived by his daughter, Renee Pastore.
