Burt Reynolds played Quint Asper, the half Comanche blacksmith who became one of the most memorable characters in Gunsmoke. He joined the long running Western in 1962 and remained with the series for three seasons, appearing in 50 episodes. However, Quint disappeared from the show after Season 10, leaving many viewers wondering why Reynolds chose to walk away from such a successful series.
The truth is that Reynolds did not leave because of a feud or behind the scenes controversy. He later described his time on Gunsmoke as one of the happiest periods of his life, but he believed he had reached a point where he needed to move forward professionally. Reynolds felt there was limited room for him to grow into a leading man while James Arness remained the unquestioned star of the series.

Reynolds explained his decision by saying that he had “served my apprenticeship” and felt there was not room for two leading men on the show. He was already gaining valuable experience as Quint Asper, but Gunsmoke remained centered on Marshal Matt Dillon. Rather than remain in a supporting role indefinitely, Reynolds decided it was time to take a risk and build a career outside Dodge City.
His departure came with the support and goodwill of his Gunsmoke colleagues. Reynolds later recalled that he left because it was simply time to move on, and he continued to speak warmly about his experience on the series. His exit allowed him to pursue new television and film opportunities, eventually setting the stage for his rise as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
Quint Asper’s disappearance was handled with surprisingly little explanation on screen. The character’s exit was not given a major farewell storyline, although the series later acknowledged that Quint had left town. Reynolds, meanwhile, went on to build a hugely successful career with films such as Deliverance, The Longest Yard, and Smokey and the Bandit.
