Angelina Jolie’s Lawyer Says Brad Pitt’s Financial Records Request Was Unnecessary After Court Ruling

Paul Murphy argues that Pitt’s attempt to obtain Jolie’s 2017–2019 financial records improperly intrudes on her privacy as their legal battle over Château Miraval continues.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's financial and legal dispute over Château Miraval has continued for years following their 2016 separation

Angelina Jolie’s legal team is pushing back after a judge rejected Brad Pitt’s latest request for financial records connected to their long-running dispute over Château Miraval. Pitt had sought Jolie’s financial information from 2017 through 2019, arguing that the records could be relevant to claims surrounding the sale of her interest in the French winery.

According to TMZ, the judge declined the request in a ruling filed Tuesday, finding that Pitt’s side had not established sufficient grounds to override Jolie’s privacy interests. The court also noted that Pitt could potentially renew the request if Jolie’s testimony eventually places her income from those years directly at issue.

The latest dispute is part of a much broader legal battle over Miraval that has continued for several years following Jolie’s 2021 sale of her stake in the winery.

Jolie’s Attorney Accuses Pitt of Trying to Control the Case

Jolie’s attorney, Paul Murphy, sharply criticized the request in comments to TMZ. Murphy argued that Pitt could defend his position in the Miraval dispute without obtaining Jolie’s private financial information.

“Mr. Pitt’s unyielding demand for harassing information is just the latest manifestation of his attempts to control her and the narratives in this case,”

Murphy told TMZ.

He added that Jolie’s objective has been to separate her personal and financial affairs from her former husband, arguing that the dispute should focus on Miraval rather than her income several years before she sold her stake.

The attorney also reiterated Jolie’s position that Pitt attempted to use her departure from Miraval as leverage in connection with a proposed nondisclosure agreement. Pitt has denied Jolie’s allegations of abuse, and the claims remain part of the broader legal dispute rather than established findings in this financial-records ruling.

Why Brad Pitt Wanted Jolie’s Older Financial Records

The former couple purchased Château Miraval during their marriage before Jolie later sold her interest in the property in 2021.

Pitt’s request concerns Jolie’s income between 2017 and 2019, a period after their 2016 separation and before she sold her interest in Château Miraval in 2021.

Pitt has argued that Jolie’s financial circumstances are relevant to her claims that she needed financial independence and that economic circumstances played a role in her decision to sell her stake. His legal team has previously sought information concerning Jolie’s movie contracts, compensation and other sources of income.

Jolie has disputed that interpretation. Her legal team has argued that references to financial independence concern separating her financial life from Pitt, rather than claiming she lacked money generally.

In September, TMZ reported that Jolie had already agreed to provide financial information from 2020 and 2021 while objecting to demands covering earlier years. Her lawyers argued that expanding the request would unnecessarily intrude on her privacy.

The legal conflict centers on Château Miraval, the French estate and winery Jolie and Pitt purchased during their marriage. Jolie sold her interest in October 2021 to Tenute del Mondo, the wine division of the Stoli Group.

Pitt subsequently sued Jolie, arguing that they had an understanding requiring consultation before either party sold their interest. Jolie has disputed his claims.

The Miraval litigation has generated several separate legal disputes involving financial records, the sale of Jolie’s stake and allegations surrounding the terms under which the transaction occurred.

For now, the latest ruling does not permanently prevent Pitt from seeking Jolie’s 2017–2019 financial records. The judge left open the possibility of a renewed request if Jolie’s testimony makes those years financially relevant to the case.
